| Doug aka "The Goat Man" It is most difficult to write about this enigmatic individual. A long time Tollhouse resident, our Doug is also the most difficult to completely comprehend, and we honestly thinks that he likes it that way. A recent widower (that means he's on the market ladies), Doug is both our social gadfly and most private individual. Collecting unique things is also one of his passions. Getting his friends to think 'out of the box' is another of his passions, sometimes causing a great deal of consternation with his methods. Having been in the military, an educator, social services and any number of other careers, the tales of which he often regales us with, he definitely is even harder than Bryce to fit into any kind of category. One thing that the residents of our town already know is that you never want to play poker with this man. He can be completely unreadable when he wants to be. He also has one of the most giving souls of anyone that we have ever met. Managing of a menagerie of goats, llamas, sheep and canines are also another of his passions, hence his moniker. |
Kristine aka "Kristy" Kristy is perpetual motion in the flesh. None of us can remember a time when we haven't seen Kristie working, either at the Market, helping her parents out, working on a variety of projects, hobbies and pets or just about anything that she truly puts her mind to. When did she does put her mind to something, she's a force to reckon with and a true force of nature. We think that she truly is the blending of her mother Sally's determination and her father Al's sense of calm in the storm. We think that she is truly the best of both worlds. |
Dillon aka "The Tollhouse Kid" Described by grandfather Al as the official greeter of the Tollhouse Market, Dillon is a young man who agrees with Tollhouse and Tollhouse most certainly agrees with him. As the pride of mother Kristie's life, Dillon is certain of his place as the center of his mother's universe and of most of the rest of ours as well. The young rascal as we sometimes call him is definitely one of Tollhouse's most lovable characters. Dillon also loves animals of all sorts, but most especially dogs, of which him and mother Christie have several. |
Leann aka "The Masseuse" Only slightly less ornery than Kelsey, or Leann provides Tollhouse with a much needed dose of vim, vigor, humor and an overwheliming respect for all living things. With her artistic nature, Leann excels in pastels, loves to paint murals and her tye-dye tshirts are visual masterpieces. Also a massuese, her skill in this area is personally attested to by our president. She is also one of the more lively members of the Tollhouse Coffee Klatch and by far it's best looking member. |

No Photograph Available as Danny prefers being behind the camera rather than in front of it
| Danny aka "Tollhouse Computer Geek" The hardest bio of all to write is this one. One of the more recent residents to our village, though having lived in the area since the late 1980's, Danny became a resident of Tollhouse after a most difficult time in his life. He found here the sense of family that he had long missed. The caring of residents such as Holly and Kate and their families truly amazed and humbled him. Tollhouse has taught him much in his 3 years here, and for that he is most thankful. His contrbutions to this project that is this website and it's company are his way of helping those who mean the most to him and hopefully to repay them for their kindness and caring, and the valuable lessons on the true meaning of life that they have taught him. One of his most constant thoughts is that it takes a village to raise a child, and it takes a village to save one's soul. |

Mike F. aka "Bronco Billy" A retired heavy equipment operator whose CB handle is Bronco Billy, hence his nickname, Mike is an occassional visiting member of the Tollhouse Coffee Klatch. Fitting right in here in the foothills, his favorite activities include 4 wheeling, fishing and camping, especially in and around the Bald Mountain area. Also Mike has two wranglers aged 7 and 9. Mike also says that he has an appreciation for fine food, which makes one of his other favorite activites eating out. When speaking of fishing, Mike tells the story of wanting to catch the huge salmon that supposedly resides in the depths of Shaver Lake. We believe that this really does sound like a 'fish story" to us. (smile) |
Al aka "Papaw" When Al is at his beloved market, it's the social center of Tollhouse. Being retired military, Al is always ready to discuss the military and politics, especially if you're a retired E-8. Whether he's barbequing, or behind the counter, his market is always a warm and friendly place. More easy going than his 'better half' Sally, he nonetheless is extremely well suited to his role of small town shopkeeper. Unfortunately, Al and Sally now no longer have the market, and Al has gone back to his other great love, gardening. He is affectionately known by us and his customers as the "Yard Sarg". When you need to make your yard look the very best, Al is the man to call. |
Sally aka "Memaw" Dillon's grandmother, Kristie's mother and self described better half of Al, Sally is our community's adopted mother figure. When she's in the store, we know that we can just go in and talk and she's always there to listen. In spite of her apparent easy-going manner, Sally takes the can-do, let's get it done, no nonsense approach to any project she happens to be involved in, and for that, she's owed a certain respect and by some, a certain amount of fear. Even though, as Al, Sally is no longer in the market, we know that she's always one of those people that one can talk to. |
Holly aka "Lady of the Birds" A paragraph is not enough to describe our beloved Holly. A former bartender, clerk, and experienced in any number of professions, Holly is mother of 5 and grandmother of 2 Managing that kind of brood is something for which Holly is especially well suited. In addition, a brood of tropical birds are also beneficiaries of Holly's 'mothering'. They may be viewed at Holly's website With a heart of gold and a hard as nails approach to problem solving, Holly is one to get started on something and not give up till the job is done, come heck or high water. If you should happen to visit Tollhouse, and come across Holly just tell her that "You still got it, gal!" and then duck. |
Steve aka "The Italian Stud Muffin" As one of the few people on earth that can keep Holly in line, (well, kind of) Steve deserves our salutations. Always ready to lend a hand, Steve, along with Danny our computer geek have now managed to help make almost the entire town of Tollhouse a wireless Internet Hot Spot. Between the broadcast points of their respective residences, almost the entire town is now covered. So, if you come to visit Tollhouse, bring your laptap or your PDA and you'll be able to stay connected to the outside world. He's also our resident number cruncher having recently returned to school and acquired his accounting credentials. |
Kelsey aka "The Tollhouse Red Rose with Thorns" Kelsey, with a middle name of Rose, and her red hair and her somewhat 'mischevious' streak certainly deserves her moniker. She's definitely a force to be reckoned with, especially when riled. As much as Dillon, Kelsey is also our community project. Kelsey often remarks that she feels like she has a dozen set of parents instead of just one, but she knows that we love her and that some day she'll thank us for all the attention we give her, assuming she doesn't kill us first. Having said all that, Kelsey is now working for the company on a part time basis doing clerical work and answering phones. There is perhaps hope for her yet. |
Steven aka "The Tollhouse She-Brat" As grand daughter of Holly and niece to Kelsey, Steven has the potential for great good or great mayhem, and it appears that she hasn't decided yet which direction she is going to take, as this candid photo of her readily attests. For the most part, Steven can be a pretty good kid, except when it comes to her little sister, in which case she truly deserves her nickname, but we love her and her indomitable spirit anyway. |
Izaya aka "Mini-Brat" Also as the grandaughter of Holly and niece of Kelsey, Izaya too has the same potential as her sister, Steven. As yet, for the most part Izaya has not developed her older sister's ornery streak, but with her amazing baby blues evident in this photo of her, she's the community's choice for most likely to be a future heartbreaker. She also has a certain 'joie de vivre' that's an inspiration to many of us here in our little community. |
Kate aka "Mamma Kate" or "Mawmaw Brat" Kate is our patron saint of hard work. Never one to let a job go undone, Kate is always the one that keeps the entire town on it's toes. With her house overlooking the whole town, Kate can easily keep an eye on all of us. She's definitely a force of nature. That's bad enough, but when Kate isn't busy keeping Randy and the youngins in line, she teams up with Holly, and then it's the old proverb about the whole being greater than the sum of the parts. When the two of them team up together, we call them either, The two Lucys, if they're being bad or Thelma and Louise if they're being badder. Kate and her crew left Tollhouse in November of 2005, but she'll still remain an honorary citizen of Tollhouse wherever she may roam. |
Randy aka "The Bayou Boy" Randy is a recent transplant to our little corner of the earth. Recently lassoed, hogtied and brought here from Louisiana by Momma Kate, Randy, with his smooth charm and quiet southern ways fits right in here in Tollhouse. A truck driver by trade, Randy is always ready to help a friend in need, or spin a good yarn. An absolute master when it comes to the barbeque, or smoking meats, his shindigs when he's doing the cooking are already becoming ledgendary in the area. Since we've posted Randy's picture and biography here, we've even gotten comments from two other states telling us of his skills as a chef. When added to Momma Kate's quite extraordinary skills as a chef, the two of them form an epicurian tag team with no equal. Randy, along with Kate and the crew left Tollhouse in November 2005, but in the 1 and 1/2 year he spent with us, we've met few as friendly and neighborly. May your venture in Kentucky be a success Randy. |
Samantha aka "Sam" Randy's daughter Sam is our little gem from the South. A recent transplant to Tollhouse, as is her Dad, Sam is always a bright spot in everyone's lives. We think that Tolhouse really agrees with her, as we know she really agrees with Tollhouse. Even though, since arriving here, and being under the influence of both Steven and Kelsey, Sam has refined her inevitable Tollhouse mischevious streak, the restraining influence of Momma Kate and the rest of the us not quite so mischevious locals, we think that Sam is one great gal. Our only fear is that Kelsey and she might team up like their respective maternal figures and we'll end up with Thelma and Louise, junior. (smile) |
Alex aka "Dolittle" This blond haired young future heartbreaker is Kate's pride and joy. Alex is probably by far, the most polite young man in the town of Tollhouse. This is due, we are sure, to Momma Kate's tutelage. Always ready with a polite greeting and friendly smile, this bright young fellow also has an abiding love for the rodeo, and it's related events. He's also a hard worker on just about any task that on might wish to hire him for. He's our own most likely to suceed. Now that he's moved to Kentucky with Kate and Randy, Tollhouse just isn't the same without him. |
Bryce aka "The Mayor" Bryce is one of those kinds of individuals that absolutely refuses to fit into any kind of category or mold. When talking about his beloved dogs, there is no stopping him. One may see pictures of them at Bryce's website. They are indeed extremely fine animals. Bryce's hobby is traning these extraordinary creatures for hunting purposes and in that he and they both excel. Trigger, his pride and joy is currently a state champion. Bryce is always ready to render an opinon on a variety of subjects and one's time is generally not wasted listening. His experiences make for some mighty fine storytelling. |
Penny aka "Sweet Thing" Penny is both saint and celebrity to the town of Tollhouse. A saint for dealing with his honor 'the mayor' and our dear celebrity for the work she as done as she has appeared in the recent documentary film, Home of the Brave which premiered this year at the Sundance Film Festival. Penny along with her sisters, attended the opening of the film, which chronicles the life of Penny's mother, Viola Liuzzo, and traces the consequences of her death at the hands of the Klu Klux Klan during the civil rights demonstrations in 60's. Penny has since attended several screenings of the film af various venues, where the film has continued to garner humanitarian awards. A pre-Premiere screening of the film for several Tollhouse residents, personally narrated by Penny herself did not leave a single dry eye in the house. To Penny, the town of Tollhouse thanks you for being such an inspiration to us all. |
T.J. aka "T-Dog" Penny's son, this hard working, studious young fellow is currently a student at Fresno City College, working at the local Long's Drug Store in Prather, and still finds time to pursue his musical interests, which are quite extensive and also extremely varied. All the while, he always finds time to give a kind word in passing. T.J.'s smile also belies the possibility of a subtle sense of humor and a possibly an equally subtle underlying mischeviousness. T.J. definitely fits in here in Tollhouse. At least, until the big city (Fresno) messes with him. It seems those big cities always do. (sigh) |

Tony aka "The Original Italian Stud Muffin" He's not related to Steve, but he chose his own moniker. Founding member of the Tollhouse Coffee Klatch, Tony is our local philosopher and adviser about life, the universe and everything. He is always ready to lend a hand, give a listen, or tell a good story about his colorful and varied experiences of life. A most valuable addition to the Tollhouse clan.
Tony left us on November 9th, 2004 We'll all miss you, Tony. | |
Todd aka "The Land Baron" Entrepeneur extrodinaire and a more recent member of the Tollhouse Coffee Klatch, Todd recently has purchased some land nearby, thought by some to be less than desirable, but roadbuilder Todd has cut, scraped, leveled and with blood, sweat and no doubt a few tears has managed to make his mark as a true developer. When they see him coming to the market of late, the first question always is "How much diesel do you need today?" |
